How to choose the right Mānuka honey for my needs?

One of the most popular questions we get asked is which Mānuka honey to choose. Mānuka Health pioneered MGO testing of Mānuka honey to provide a scientifically proven measure of the honey's potency and help you confidently choose the right Mānuka for your needs . Put simply, the higher the MGO number the more potent the honey.

As a general guide we recommend:

+ For use as a nutritious sweetener or for culinary use – go for the lower numbers MGO 30+ to MGO 115+

+ For daily protection and wellbeing enhancement – go for MGO 263+ or MGO 400+

+ For more acute/targeted use, aim for the higher numbers – MGO 573+ and above

WHAT IS MGO?

MGO - THE MAGIC MĀNUKA INGREDIENT

MGO stands for methylglyoxal, the naturally occurring compound that makes Mānuka honey special and gives it the unique potency that makes it so different to other honeys.

In 2008, following the ground-breaking discovery of MGO by our research partners, Mānuka Health developed the MGO grading system for Mānuka honey – to keep it simple, the higher the MGO the higher the potency.

MGO is an internationally recognised guide to help people confidently purchase Mānuka honey based on the trusted science of natural MGO potency.

We recommend using the lower MGO levels (30+ to 115+) as a delicious and nutritious sweetener, MGO 263+ or 400+ as an everyday wellbeing boost, and MGO 573+ and above for more acute and targeted use.
