Complete quality control from hive to home

Manuka honey is a precious and delicate resource that requires careful handling and processing to ensure its special natural properties are retained during the extraction and packing process. Unlike many Manuka honey companies Manuka Health owns the full process from the hive to jar - from our 20,000 beehives, to our own extraction and processing facility and our in-house quality testing laboratory. This we believe is crucial to ensuring that the honey we produce is guaranteed to meet quality and food safety standards as well as retaining its potent natural properties that make it so revered around the world.

How to be sure you are getting the real thing?

The unique QR codes that sit on the lid of our new jars go a long way to reassure our customers on the origin and authenticity of the Manuka Health Manuka Honey they are buying. However, such is our commitment to product integrity and safety, we have gone the extra step in partnering with scientific traceability company Oritain.

Oritain’s method traces products back to their true origin using advanced science. They collect samples of each and every batch of our Manuka honey for analysis - creating its own origin fingerprint. This means that we can scientifically prove the origin of any jar of Manuka Health Manuka Honey sold to authenticate that it is a genuine product and not counterfeit. We are proud to bear the Oritain certification on our packs to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to quality and safety.

Comprehensive testing for authenticity

Along with the guarantees that the Trust Codes and Oritain partnerships provide for traceability, we test every jar of Manuka honey three times throughout the extraction, process and packing process to ensure that it is true to label and pure from contaminants. Our Manuka honey is tested to industry standards to ensure each batch is genuine New Zealand Manuka honey as set out by the MPI (Ministry of Primary Industries, New Zealand) new standards set in December 2017. The definition specifies a set of five science-based markers which identify the origin of Manuka honey. These markers need to be present to credibly call it New Zealand Manuka honey and only honey that meets the new standards will be certified for export as New Zealand Manuka honey.

UMF and MGO certified

Our lead test for potency is for the compound methylglyoxal (MGO). After years of research scientists discovered MGO as the key natural compound in Manuka honey that relates to its potency. Manuka Health pioneered MGO as a transparent testing and rating system that gives consumers assurance of quality. Over the past decade we have built MGO to be an internationally recognised guide in helping consumers purchase Manuka honey based on its MGO potency.

 Manuka Health is a proud member of the UMF association and will now display both the UMF and MGO marks on the front of our labels. Our iconic red MGOTM double hex mark gives the exact content of MGO in each jar (an indicator of its potency and power) and the UMF mark gives an added endorsement authenticating New Zealand origin.

Purity, Quality & Food safety

To ensure the absolute integrity and purity of our precious Manuka honey, we have a strict quality testing process which includes microbiology, toxins, sugars, pollen, moisture content, flavour, colour and enzyme activity.

Because our hives are placed in the wild – remote, pristine environments away from agricultural land - there is very little risk of herbicides and pesticides being present in the environment. However to be absolutely certain of this, we also routine test our honey for pesticides and herbicides including glyphosate residues to make sure that the honey leaving our packing facility is of the highest quality and food safety and free of any contaminants
